TRAVEL
Travel, like photography, is my way of immersing myself in an ongoing quest to be present, seeing deeply and honing skills that when combined allow me to make artful documentary images of the unique features in environments that can be familiar but also weird and wonderful.
As a Fujifilm X system user, I love leaning into the array of film simulations to add a further layer of character to what I see with my eyes. It brings a sense of play to exploring. Abstractions, patterns, tones take on greater interest when the colours are rendered in filmic ways. Making creative decisions to interpret the setting lends itself to a more thoughtful approach. Other times, practising being reactive and speedily capturing fast changing unique moments in street photography forces me to keep my attention on my surroundings and noticing pockets of light, wonderful fashion, charming characters and details that can express a story of sorts when placed in the same frame.
It takes time to not only get the feel of a place but to understand it, how the light works at various times of the day and the season you're in, how to compose for the scale of the landscape and attitude of locals to photography. Some places feel safe and others are foreboding. Caution can impede the art regardless of the desire to work freely, respect must always be given to environment you're in. So it is ongoing, learning how to approach the photography as whole when I travel.
I intend to continue to building my skills of perception and technicality on my journey to places new and revisited. I also love to interweave professional client work on my travels.
I'm available for commissions for travel magazines, government and non-government tourism bodies, hotels and more.
